More seriously, you may have a virus or a spyware program that are running in the background, eating into the available resources quietly.
Check:
- If you have installed any large applications recently.
- If you have installed any "freeware" or email attachments.
- If you have clicked "Yes" to prompts requesting software installation.
- Check for hard disk space and memory availability. Consider adding more memory.
